A double chin, also known as submental fat is a common condition that occurs when a layer of fat forms below your chin. A double chin is often associated with weight gain, but you don’t have to be overweight to have one. Genetics or looser skin resulting from aging may also cause a double chin.

There are a number of treatments for reducing the appearance of a double chin, including surgical and non-surgical options.

Who is not a candidate for Lipolysis Injection ?

Patients with very loose skin or poor tone may not be suitable candidates for the procedure

Most patients have at least two treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, Patients can have up to six treatments to the area under the chin. Your surgeon can develop a plan that best suits your individual anatomy. Most patients see results by 6 to 8 weeks after a treatment. Unless a patient were to gain weight, the results should be long-lasting.

A double chin is typically caused by a combination of factors, including:

  • Excess fat: Accumulation of fat beneath the chin.
  • Age: As we age, skin loses elasticity and muscles weaken, leading to sagging.
  • Genetics: Some people are genetically predisposed to have more fat in the chin area.
  • Weight gain: Increased body fat can lead to fat accumulation in the chin area.
  • Poor posture: Slouching or forward head posture may contribute to the appearance of a double chin over time.

Surgical options may be considered for more significant or stubborn cases:

  • Liposuction: Removes excess fat from the chin area.
  • Neck lift: A procedure that removes excess skin and tightens the muscles of the neck and chin.
  • Chin liposculpture: A more targeted procedure where fat is removed from specific areas of the chin.
  • Kybella: Results can take 4-6 weeks after each treatment session, with final results seen after 2-3 sessions.
  • CoolSculpting: Results are typically visible in about 1-3 months.
  • Ultherapy: Results may take 2-3 months to become fully visible, with skin tightening continuing over time.

While more common in older adults due to the loss of skin elasticity, a double chin can also affect younger people, especially if they have a genetic predisposition, are overweight, or have poor posture.
